The Palestinian Diaspora refers to Palestinians living outside of Historic Palestine. There are approximately 8 million Palestinians in the diaspora. There are 2.6 million Palestinians in Jordan with Jordanian citizenship, and another 400 000 living in Arab and Gulf countries, with a strong community of 200 000 in Saudi Arabia. The other 5 million reside in other parts of the world, most of them (Around 3 million or 60%) being Christian, and belonging mostly to the Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholic, Latin/Roman Catholic, and Armenian Orthodox churches. The start of the Palestinian Diaspora was during Ottoman time, Palestinian Christians started migrating in the late 19th century and early 20th century , mainly to South America, to escape the persecution and discrimination of the Ottoman Turks. This caused huge Palestinian Christian communities rising in South America. Today, over 500 000 Palestinian Christians reside in Chile, over 250 000 in Honduras, and similar numbers in Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Belize. Later on, more people (Both Muslim and Christian) left Historic Palestine during the British Rule. In 1948, 800 000 Palestinians were displaced or expelled, and forced to leave their ancestral lands and settle as refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and other Arab and non-Arab countries, where many are still discriminated against to this day. More Palestinians were displaced or expelled during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, and also during both Intifadas, more significantly apparent amongst the Christian community which was as much as 30% in 1948, and less than 5% today. Most of the people of Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Jerusalem today reside in Australia and other European countries, where there are also strong Palestinian communities. Palestinians all around the world, whether Muslim, Christian, Druze, or Baha'i, have contributed much to their countries. From being presidents, to prime ministers, to queens, and to musicians and actors, they have shown that their suffering through the years does not weaken them down, but only makes them more successful.

  • Great video...and good choice of music. The Palestinians pictured here are quite integrated, assimilated and blended in their new host countries. Somehow the Palestinians are wrongly depicted or underrepresented in the US media. The stereotypes of what an Arab/ Middle-Eastern person is...remains constantly in the US media. It isn't too known but important that Palestinians, Lebanese and Syrians historically relocated to Europe and the Americas since the mid 19th century: a long time ago. +

  • Palestinians are so successful whether they are living under occupation or abroad! but still i blame the people who had the choice to stay but they left! they left their lands which are now being taken by the settlers, the real palestinians are those who stayed in the west bank and gaza under occupation and shelling and refused to leave, my family had the choice to leave to canada but my father refused to leave the land and i'm proud of his choice
