That puts her subconsciously trying to win your approval when she believes you are not automatically infatuated with her, because only high status guys aren't concerned with fawning all over her because high status guys are the prize to be caught, not the ones doing the chasing.

Bad advice. If you single her out you are alienating the rest of the group, they will resent that and work against you by talking you down. Also, an attractive girl is used to being hit on so they put up their guard, they have gotten good at rejecting the many guys that constantly come at them. Instead focus on her friends so they will be your ally, and mostly ignore her and include back handed complements and other comments which demonstrate you are not trying to impress her.
