Rosie, thanks for your commentary, which is more thoughtful than some of the other posts on this blog. But honestly, do you think calling someone a 'tranny' is really equivalent to calling someone a woman? Tranny is mostly a term of exploitation and put down and I agree with you that, in general use, it's patronizing and inappropriate to try and use it for gaining hip quotient. Again, if you haven't been oppressed by the term, so why are you the one to decide if it's offensive? Just askin'.

"Tranny" is used against transwomen to take away their womenhood. Historically, it's never been used as a term of derision against transmen. Most transwomen find it offensive. It's one thing for a term to be used sarcastically between members of a community, but for cis-people (including LGB peeps) to use "tranny" is offensive. Tranny is, in fact, an oppressive term to those who've been oppressed by it. Please do NOT use it for people (especially transwomen) you don't know well.
