I use the general term Victorian Era Hairstyles to span about 100 years from the advent of photography until long hair went out of vogue after World War I. Long hair was considered a sign of good health, good diet, prosperity, and femininity.

  • @JsgHair71 my hair is only waist length admittedly, however I know many people with hair down to their knees and they say that it is not painful - they just have to make sure when they put their hair up they use a style which will distribute weight evenly. Bunned braids or braids pinned to the top of the head are excellent, comfortable styles for this purpose.

Probably some of the more elaborate ones were painful, but modern women wear painful high heels for special occasions.

  • If you've ever read the Little House series of books Laura talks about how you were not allowed to put up your hair until you were of a certain age and maturity. These styles are beautiful but painful. The women never cut their hair and headaches were predominant.

  • LOL!! IF you have long, thick hair like me...you know why they put buns/braids on top!

To keep the head ache away!!! LOL!!
