Often these type of locks are tied into the fire alarm/smoke detector system in an institutional setting. They can also be tied into the sprinkler system. If any of those systems is activated the lock magnet will release and leave the door in fail safe or unlock mode.

You will have a lot of fire in front of the door I don’t think you will be going out that door. But if the has died more than likely the power has been interrupted unlocking the door.

Magnetic locks are actually better for firefighters, and the building owner, as the lock will continue to work as normal afterwards, with no damage to the door, or lock after being forced open.

@Aqlor The locks on the apartment buildings are placed the way they are, so that way a firefighter can get to it. If you notice, on high security buildings, the locks are placed on the inside.
