Funeral services were held this morning at Wayzata Community Church for long-time Plymouth resident Marv Ramstad, the father of former U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad and Minnesota Tax Judge Sheryl Ramstad.

Ramstad died Wednesday, July 1, of respiratory failure at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He was 89.

Jim Ramstad said his father was a man of "great strength, both physically and mentally" and stressed that the passion for public service shared by him and his sister was instilled in them by their father.

"He taught my sister and me the values of hard work, patriotism and public service. He personified the 'Greatest Generation.' He taught us those values and along with family those were his greatest values," he said.

Marv Ramstad grew up in North Dakota and worked with way through college by mining gold in the Alaskan Yukon with his brothers.

He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII before returning home to North Dakota, where he stayed until 1984 when he retired and relocated to Plymouth.

Greg Rye, of Wayzata, has been a close friend of the Ramstad family for about 30 years. He called Marv a 'gentle giant' saying he was one of the most thoughtful, happy people he'd ever met.

"In 30 years of knowing Marv, I can't say I've ever remembered him missing my birthday, or remembering me at Christmas or remembering my wife's birthday," he said. "He was always so thoughtful and had that big smile on his face.

He is survived by his son, Jim; daughter, Sheryl; five grandchildren; and his brother, A. William. He is preceded in death by his wife Della Mae; parents Joseph and Sarah; three brothers; and a sister.
