Whilst the condition of being 'enlightened' is often associated with a particularly emotional or subjective state, it might better be seen as related to intellection, and more closely allied to the historical understanding of cultural enlightenment. This idea is prefigured in the writings of Augustine who distinguishes different ways of knowing as 'corporeal', 'spiritual', and 'intellectual', in which the intellectual way was ascendent and closer to God.
