@bsod4u2 I beg to differ, noise is something much more distinguished than 'popular culture', I would be pleased if such a distinction were made between discordant sounds and auditory trash as I happen to enjoy the former and despise the latter alongside you.

I heard this performed by the Epsicopal/Anglican choir of St. James in the City (Los Angeles) as part of their Evensong service on Sunday May 8th, 2011. It was sublime in a perfect setting...the entire congregation sat in frozen silence as this piece played out. It was so beautiful with an ending sung at this tempo..an ending that did not want to end. Gorecki IMHO is a genius in his deliberate use of silence and nuance creating enormous atmospheres that sweep up the listener/choir/cities.

Translated lyrics, second part:
Perhaps the poor child/Lies in a rough ditch/and instead he could have been/lying in his warm bed
Oh, sing for him/God's little song-birds/Since his mother/Cannot find him
And you, God's little flowers/May you blossom all around/So that my son/May sleep happily
-
Translated lyrics:
Where has he gone/My dearest son?/Perhaps during the uprising/The cruel enemy killed him
Ah, you bad people/In the name of God, the most Holy/Tell me, why did you kill
My son?
Never again/Will I have his support/Even if I cry/My old eyes out/Were my bitter tears
to create another River Oder/They would not restore to life/My son
He lies in his grave/and I know not where/Though I keep asking people/Everywhere

I haven't even listened to a minute of the song and i'm already crying...i have no idea what it means too...it is so beautiful and sad
Magnificent :)

This is Gorecki best known composition and his stroke of genius.
Those who find it boring need to go listen to top 40 BS intended for the brain dead masses.
Known to us as noise.

Ní chluinim fuiaim lachan ná gé ann,
ná fiolar ag éamh sois cuain,
ná fiú na mbeacha chun saothair
thabharfadh mil agus céir don tslua.
Níl ceol binn milis na n-éan ann
le hamharc an lae a dhul uainn,
náan chuaichín i mbarra na ngéag ann,
ós í chuirfeadh an saol chun suain.
