Apparently it was named "One O'Clock Jump" because when they were on a radio broadcast, the band had already finished all the songs on their list with around 10 minutes to go. When the announcer asked what the next song was, Basie said to call it "One O'Clock Jump" because he noticed it was nearing one o'clock. They pretty much made it up on the spot, building on things they practiced during rehearsals, with Basie coming up with that piano intro.

What's little known is the original title of this song. As the band's final performance of the evening occupied the 60 minutes of the midnight hour, it was only after that set that the musicians were finally able to make use of the rest room. However, at the recording session, the fellas decided to NOT call this song "One O'Clock Dump." Why is that startling act so little known? Probably because it's not true.

I understand the real name of this song was "Blue Balls".
