DIRECTOR'S HAND: Here the director uses three planes of character blocking. Louise is on the phone in the foreground, Thelma is moving around in the second plane, and there is a cowboy standing in the third plane. There is also a point where the focus of the camera shifts from Louise in the foreground to Thelma in the second plane, and then back. This is called "pulling focus" or a "rack focus." It is done manually by turning a dial that is hooked to the focus ring on the lens.
