On Monday, April 6, 2009, I crossed by kayak 19 nautical miles to Catalina Island in Southern California, ate lunch, and crossed back the same day, making for a 38 nautical mile day. The crossing over took 5 hours and 30 minutes, and the crossing back took 6 hours and 5 minutes. It was my 6th Catalina For Lunch and my 28th crossing of the channel between Catalina and the mainland.

I used my homebuilt Point Bennett sea kayak design:

and my homebuilt carbon fiber Greenland paddle:

  • Looks like you had a great adventure. I just did the crossing last weekend to Two Harbors, then to Avalon afterwards. Took the XP back.

  • @bacosbits I enjoyed your video. It looks like you had a nice smooth crossing. I crossed over again last month for a 7-day circumnav trip and had similar smooth water. It's been a rather calm couple of months.

  • Duane,

Pretty impressive, in every way, and weather just perfect! Not too warm, not too windy (your microphone seems a bit sensitive to wind, though - what type of video camera do you use?!

  • My camera is a Pentax Optio W10.

  • Bah! NOTHING whatsoever about lunch!

  • I hate to disappoint you, but my lunch at Catalina consisted of a can of Coke and a bag of Fritos. I just didn't have much of an appetite.

  • Is that illegal?

  • Ever thought of using a motor? Makes things a lot easier...

  • Thats intense to go back same day. I have been wanting to do this for a while now. I have a malibu explore, fishing yak. Im thinking it would be a mistake to take that. Any advice you could give, what are the necessities gear wise and what kinda yak would you recommend.

  • Nice work.

  • Wow what a trip. I want to go over from newport in my 20' power boat. You had a nice clear day. Way to go.

  • Not bad considering it is a compact! Good show!
