An earthworm (Lumbricus terristris) moving about on a dissection tray. The earthworm moves using peristalsis, similar to how food moves down the esophagus. In the earthworm, circular muscles contract at certain parts so that uncontracted portions are anchored to the substrate. Longitudinal muscles at those contracted parts also then contract to pull the animal forward.
