There is of course an optimum. Spinning too fast in too low a gear will cause the heart rate to go sky high and you will just incur an oxygen debt. On shorter hills mashing a big gear is no bad thing,,,,as long as there aren't too many of them. Of course mashing will bring about more leg fatigue so lots of trial and error is necessary.....And we ain't all built the same so although there are broadbase principles everyone has to find their own best way.
