I have recently Acquired some 2nd generation DMUs fairly cheaply and with the onset of the dark winter evenings I decided to have a go at putting some interior lights in them. In this video we see two class 158s running in tandem. Both units have been fully digitalised with DCC decoders controlling both the lights and the motors. In all there are 5 decoders between the two units. They are coupled together using US "Kadee" couplers which are excellent for use with these trains. Also in the video is a Class 170 in the now defunct but colourful "One Anglia" livery. This has also had the full DCC treatment and installation of interior lights. It should also be noted that all the DMUs in this video have had the original head/tail lights replaced with something a bit brighter than the original ones fitted at the factory. To complement the DMUs we also see some SR EMUs with factory fitted interior lighting. Enjoy!

  • Jules-Looking forward to seeing a D0260 Lion on here in the future.Just be wary that if you want it to negotiate any tight radius curves, you'll need to strip it of bufferbeam detail from one end.Why in heaven Heljan don't provide at least one dummy beam to swap(a la Kestrel) still baffles me.Obviously aimed at people to buy & shove in a cabinet I suppose.....

Apart from that annoyance,it's a great model in terms off performance AND looks!

  • @Phippstickman I have had Lion for a couple of months now and it hasn't given me an ounce of trouble. It's such a good runner I use it quite a lot (It's easy to spot in the semi dark lol). One thing I have done though is replace two of the wheelsets because the ones it came with were not centred properly which made the loco wobble at high speed. She's fine now.. all I have to remember is not to handle her with oily hands!

  • Sara and i frequently have coffee with Jules garden railway. It has become part of our morning wake up routine.

We can't wait for something new.

  • @traingeekboy I haven't been filming anything since this was uploaded. I doubt I will have the time to do one before Christmas now but I have taken delivery of a Bachmann Desiro class 350 unit as well as a Heljan "Lion" which will feature in the next video hopefully some time in the New Year.

  • another top production jules worth the wait love the couplings of the 158s are you tempted to wrap them in fgw livery ? i have a 158 wrap on order great night time theme i will first install signals before i attempt this night time theme keep the fresh vids coming thumbs up from london bring on the cigs and thumpers.

  • @steveallen808909 I don't actually like FGW livery really so no. I'm going to leave both units in the livery they are in as I think they look good as they are. The 2-car unit has performed really well on the branch line and it has now become a regular service on that line.

  • A small sachet of 'copper-lube' from Motor Discout stores will cure the squeek. It is a heavy grease with metallic/copper particles, so don't over do it. There'll be enough to service 10,000 locomotives in a small sachet! Only the tiniest smear is all that's required, and with it having metal in the grease it is well conductive. But as I say don't overdo it!!

  • in some peoples videos of model railroads running at night, I have noticed flicker caused by the frame rate refresh and the cycle rate associated with the polarity flip used with DCC, something that I have not noticed with Jules's videos.

  • @metadyneman Thanks for the reply.

  • @metadyneman i agree it does look great that regional railways livery definitly got about .are they kadee couplers 46? was wondering also you being a brighton man if you ever saw a wales and west 158 on the southern region i know the wessex trains 158 livery did but i have no idea if the other livery got southwest any info would be helpful im in need of some 2 car units as my epbs have become 4 epbs cheers

  • I have that annoying "wiper squeak" on my Blue/Yellow Class 43 HST power car,Jules.Being as it was pre-owned,it's nothing I can do much about.

These things look stunning in the dark mate-Nice one!
