The Iron Dream and Funerals In An Empty Room are masterpieces that go beyond the depths of Lustmord's music in my opinion. Listen to them in bed with headphones.
This is nice for what it is. But, I wouldn't say he's 'the king' or better than Lustmord based on this.
Plus, you need to keep in mind that for the last 6 years -anyone- with a Mac and some basic software can create these types of layered dark ambient 'soundscapes'.
Lustmord was doing all this in the late 80's, early 90's when you had to have talent and technical know-how, (not to mention money).
I'm not taking anything away from Hensley. In fact I would buy this if I could find it anywhere.
I don't know about the king, he's only got two solo albums under his belt, but if he keeps releasing ones as good as The Iron Dream then yes, I'd say he's a damn good contender. His debut I don't like that much (apart from "Paradise" and "Mother of Dust," which are godly) but Iron Dream is easily one of my top five ambient albums.
Ulf Söderberg is definitely my favorite overall though. Tidvatten has not been touched and probably never will be, and it gets better as the album goes on too.

Michael J.V. Hensley is the king of dark ambient as far as I'm concerned. Nobody, not even Lustmord can do it like him
