i would like to politely disagree- religious belief does not start war. when a man believes he should force his belief on another man- then war starts. Islam is the perfect example- submit or die.

you are right, but profit is a strong motivation also, countries need money for war, so they turn to banks for loans. eg, no trade route crosses vietnam, etc. watch zeitgeist and its addendum :)

Maybe you should look at a map of Vietnam. It's a natural stop for all of the islands of Malaysia, Indonesia and the Phillipines. It's one of the last land stops before shipping to those islands. That makes most of Vietnam a pretty good trade route. You should look to see how far away Hong Kong is from northern Vietnem.
Since banks are a relativly new idea (really only a few hundred years old), the only way for countries or local groups to get profit is/ was by using trade routes.
