I have this same model year of the Elantra and my fiance backed into a light pole and my car had 0 damage so its a good bumper... My cousin however drving a Chevy Cobalt backed into a light pole and did alot of damage to the bumber so I guess the Elantra is better then the Chevy then..
I have an 01 Elantra, and I learned this through experience. I accidentally backed into a tree at 5 mph. No damage to my bumper, though I left a small dent in the tree. However, if you back the rear corner of the bumper into a truck bumper, it leaves a dent in the Elantra but no damage at all to the truck.
I backed into my buddy's car at well over 15 MPH and there is not a single scratch on the bumper! I love my Elantra :D

Cars, more and more, are being designed directly to pass these kinds of tests.
Some companies have been caught doing this... but there is nothing criminal about it... wrong... yeah, I'd say so.
Check the bumper at some random spot... then see how it fairs!
