I think it's called "compound words", a feature of the language (and many others, including Swedish). English kind of does it, but uses hyphens between the words.

Even though it's been some months since she was erupting...the ash is still in the air ( I live in Reykjavík, the capital) the ash will come in the air everynow and then for some years to come..

Now we're just waiting for Hekla or Katla to erupt.
