Hey there, YouTube
viewer/listener...

I uploaded this track
mostly to see if any of
you dub-heads out
there know anything
about it - I got it off of a
radio show years ago,
called "The Echo
Chamber" on KFAI
and I'm not sure, but I
think it's an I-Roy track
titled "Festival Mash Up"
from the album pictured
here, which I found on
the blog at:
bloggersdelite.blogspot.
com
/2008/06/cherry-oh-baby.html

Other YouTubers have
suggested other similar
tracks, and indeed this
particular track seems
to be a mash up of two
related tracks - it starts
out as the same as
"Version Festival" by I-
Roy on Dragon, as
posted by user
"bootboysgoonforever"
(thanks for that BTW),
but the ending is totally
different, as it seems to
seamlessly fade in to a
version of Eric
Donaldson's "Cherry Oh
Baby" at around 4 minutes.

In any case, I love all of
this, all versions, Eric
Donaldson's original
tracks, and all I-Roy
toasts, etc. - please if
anyone has more tracks
or more information,
please post or
comment!

Peace!

  • After 1971, Toots and the Maytals with 'Pomps and Pride' in 1972 and Morvin Brooks with 'Jump in the Line' in 1973, people were comparing them to Eric Donaldson. Because the songs could not match 'Cherry Oh Baby' of 1971, most people were still dancing to that song. So I-Roy teamed up with Eric and did this song!

  • @IBumpg Thanks for that tidbit - makes sense - it's hard to out do 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'Festival', so why not let I-Roy toast it up?!?! Donaldson has an amazing voice, but no one can touch Horace Andy - his voice is by far the best IMHO. Nothing compares to Skylarking/Better Version (with King Tubby at the controls) - best reggae/dub track ever (again, in my humble opinion...)

  • Hey I got this album stashed away somewhere.... The track here is a follow up to Cherry oh baby called Oh what a festival by Eric Donaldson. The I Roy track is the next track on the album.

Incidentally I met the great Roy Reid in Hammersmith, london a good few years ago... A true gent and sadly missed... always my favourite toaster....

Check out I ROY - BLACKMAN TIME 95

That is the gig where I met him... rare footage.

    Love and peace...

  • I only guessed on the album cover - I got the track from a radio show....

I love this I-ROY stuff - great live clip you suggested! I must get more!

  • It's not quite the same - it's the same for the first 4 minutes, then yours has a different ending - more lyrics. My track switches to "Cherry Oh Baby" after 4 minutes or so ... at first I wondered if my track was the I-Roy track I found on that blog called "festival mash up", but now I'm really thinking my track is just 2 tracks back to back - I think the radio dj just cross-faded out of your "version festival" track and into "cherry oh baby" real seamlessly, and I thought it was 1 full track.

There is some great I Roy stuff on CD, Including : Don't check me with no lightweight stuff (1972-75) But my personal choice would have to be : Gussie presenting I Roy on the Trojan label. Two CD's, CD1 all I Roy kiiler cuts, CD2 Features the original tracks with artists like Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, Alton Ellis and Gregory Issacs, plus some of the Dubs with Augustus Pablo.

Check it on ebay, there is a new copy up for grabs in the states $20.00 One for the connoisseurs.....

  • Ya the DJ did all the effects also. You can tell cuz all the intstruments are echoed at the same time. Very Nice medley though whoever did it. Thanks

  • hi this is the same as the track i added just has had reverb put on it by the radio station !!! good sound though its called version festival and yes it is i roy
