As Miyazaki's wonderful Ponyo arrives in UK cinemas, what lessons can we draw from a recent spate of animations that include a stop motion George Clooney in The Fantastic Mr Fox, an octegenarian lead character in Pixar's Up, and a hand-drawn heroine in Disney's The Princess and the Frog?

  • ur right. Ponyo is awesome.

  • Dr K, some of us are wondering if you read the comments on YT or should we only comment on your BBC website? Ta, Adam. Bedford.

  • Dr Kermode, I can not express how happy I am that you enjoyed "Thumbilina"! My dad was a storyboard artist for the film.

  • But Mark don't you have those glasses that turn 3D into 2D? Couldn't you take them to Toy Story 2 3D and enjoy just watching Toy Story 2 in the cinema?

  • You are forgetting the Hungarian animation!

  • What about the Irish film 'The Secret of Kells' which has also got the oscar nod. Beautiful home grown hand drawn animation with stunningly beautiful backgrounds. Small time company up against the big hitters. Bring 'em on.

  • I think that "digimation" is a poor word for 3D computer generated animation. "Hand-drawn" is a good term for tradition style 2D. CG animation is a good term for 3D computer animation (3DCA was the term for my college degree). The resurgence of 3D movies makes things more complicated I guess.

CG animation can be really good, and Pixar tends to be doing the most with it. The problem is, you will need like a Miyazaki level innovator to make really outstanding artwork in CG.

  • You seem to have overlooked the hand drawn Secret of Kells which is also up for an Oscar this year

  • Can't wait to see Ponyo. :D
