Jay and Stacey Carswell of Osborne County were recognized for their outstanding contributions to conservation and stewardship of the land when they were awarded the 2006 Kansas Farm Bureau Natural Resources Award. The Carswells received their award during Kansas Farm Bureau's 88th annual meeting in Manhattan, Nov. 17-18, 2006.
The Carswells operate a diversified livestock and cropping operation consisting of cattle, sheep, swine, wheat, milo, soybeans and alfalfa. Their cropping operation is 100 percent no-till. The Carswells say that since implementing a no-till system, they rely on soil sampling to determine fertility needs and have seen a reduced need for using other chemicals.
The Carswells livestock operation includes a rotational grazing system, as well as cross fencing and water tanks to widen the distribution of livestock in their pastures. Jay and Stacey have also installed buffer and filter strips along creeks adjacent to their cattle feeding pens in order to protect water resources. The couple has worked closely with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and utilized several of its programs while implementing conservation on their farm and ranch.
The KFB Natural Resources Award recipient is selected from a group of ten Kansas Farm Bureau members, each of whom have received recognition for their commitment to environmental protection and natural resources conservation within their geographic KFB district.
