Lots of misinformation on the 936 here. I have several books on Le Mans and the late '70s 936s had about 540-580 HP and reached up to 220+ mph on the Mulsanne. The heavier roadcar based 935s could make 750-850 HP and threaten 230 mph, although they couldn't lap as fast as the best 936s. Still, damn impressive that they could outrun the 936s! By '81, the last of the 936s had up to 640 HP and could reach 235 mph, amazing!
My favorite era of Le Mans is '76 to '91, era of the Turbo Gods!!!
To be fair, the cars that took off in the late '80s did so because of total tire failures. Punctures were and still are the ultimate nightmare of a Le Mans driver, but at those speeds, a puncture which leads to tire failure is even more frightening.
