Habitat Cambodia Build 2009 = Phnom Penh and Udong
The 21 families building homes with Habitat for Humanity in Cambodia during the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project 2009 lived near the Steung Meanchey dump site when they were interviewed for this publication . The stinking, smoke-filled, 100-acre dump on the outskirts of the capital, Phnom Penh, was closed in July . It had been a source of livelihood for those who live there—adults and children alike scavenged through the rubbish, looking for anything that might be resold . Others bought the discarded items from scavengers and repaired them, turning them into usable, resalable items . In recent years, working conditions at the dump had worsened, as did prices for the recyclable or reusable materials they gather
