Alyssum Pohl, dancer and graduate student at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, brings wit and joy to her performance. A lifelong dancer, she has been performing and teaching tribal-style bellydance nationwide for over 10 years. In addition, Alyssum is accomplished in yoga, front-bending contortion, rhythm tap, and has many years of training in other dance forms from around the world. At the Monterey Institute, she avidly studies International Environmental Policy. Alyssum's TEDxMonterey talk focused on where deliberate innovation meets revolutionary innovation.

This year's TEDxMonterey inspired and engaged the Monterey community with fascinating leaders, inventors, scientists, artists, community activists and global dreamers. With an all star line up of inspirational speakers the Monterey Institute of International Studies hosted the event on April 15th, 2011 and enjoyed participation from over 400 people both in person and online. The theme of this year's TEDxMonterey was Cultivating Innovation, which dazzled the audience through the themes of question, engage and transform.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  • Thank you for sharing your inspiration and thought process. I remember hearing about your misfortune at Tufts. Wonderful to see what you have done. I too am facing a big transition-- not like yours but revolutionary none the less. Your video has helped me remember how transitions are possible. Thanks so much.

  • While at times painful to watch, your Dance of Life is inspirational as well as very honest. Thank you and continue to be revolutionary!
