On this episode of Wax On we are breaking a hobby box of 2008 Upper Deck Spectrum Baseball.
I finally hit my first hot box of the year; I was starting to wonder if it was ever going to happen.
The base set consists of 100 cards, all of which are veterans. There are 5 colored and sequentially numbered parallel versions of these cards: Orange numbered to 399, Green numbered to 199, Red numbered to 99, Blue numbered to 25, and Gold all 1 of 1.
There is a 100 card Derek Jeter Retrospectrum insert set. This set is the only non-autograph, non-memorabilia set in this product, other than the base set. There are two sequentially numbered parallel sets for the these cards; one is numbered to 99, the other is numbered to 2 and feature autographs.
The memorabilia cards are plentiful in this product. There is a 100 card set of Spectrum Swatches numbered to 99, a 100 card set of Retrospectrum Swatches numbered to 99, a 65 card set of Spectrum Dual Swatches numbered to 99, a 20 card set of Three Star Swatches numbered to 75, and a 15 card set of Four Star Swatches numbered to 15.
The Retrospectrum swatches come in two sequentially numbered parallel sets. one is numbered to 45, the other is numbered to 25 and features a patch instead of a swatch.
All of the Spectrum Swatches come in sequentially numbered parallel versions. Orange numbered to 75, Green numbered to 50, Red numbered to 35, Purple numbered from 2 to 51 depending on the player, Light Blue Patches numbered to 15, Dark Gray all 1 of 1, Green Patches numbered to 50, and Light Gray Patches numbered to 15. There is also an autographed parallel set; only 65 of the subjects are in this set, they are numbered anywhere from 5 to 30.
There are three signature sets in this product. The only one dealing with baseball is the 45 card set of Spectrum Rookie Signatures. This set also comes in two parallel versions: Diecut and Non-diecut.
The other two signature sets deal with celebrities. There is a 54 card set called Spectrum of Stars. These cards also come in Diecut parallel version. The other signature set is a 148 card set called Spectrum Celebrity Cut Signatures; these cards are all 1 of 1.
Upper Deck also inserted Yankee Stadium Legacy and Buyback Signature cards into this product. These cards are available across most of their products this year.
One thing worth mentioning is the color of the base cards. The box and the Upper Deck website have them colored light gray; they are actually a blueish color. The colors on the rest of the cards are swapped around too. It can be very confusing.
Like I said earlier, I hit a hot box. That just means I beat the odds, it does not mean I got anything of value. I received roughly half of the base set and several base set parallels. I also pulled 5 Derek Jeter Retrospectrums, and 5 Yankee Stadium Legacy cards. I received two Spectrum of Stars Signatures; one of Steven Sweet and the other of Dee Snider. I was actually excited about the Snider card, I am a fan of his. I also got two Spectrum Rookie Signatures; one of Ryan Hanigan and one of Eugenio Velez.
There was a stack of memorabilia cards in this box. I received a Swatches base set Richie Sexson. Two Orange parallels; one of Miguel Cabrera, the other of Ben Sheets. Two Green parallels; one of Eric Chavez, the other of Jake Peavy. One Red parallel of Juan Pierre. And one Three Star Swatch of Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez, and Travis Hafner.

I have seen them as low as $140 and as high as $180. This one was close to $180 (after tax) from a hobby shop near by.
