This Is It would have been one of the greatest concerts to ever see had Michael Jackson not passed so soon. It consisted of world-class dancers and pyrotechnics all aligned with Michael's artistic direction of every facet of the concert. Originally it was set to happen in London, England and it was to be a nature awareness concert highlighting one of Michael's biggest concerns: the preservation of forests and the planet in whole. But what we really get is an intimate look at what it was like for this handful of people to work with the king of pop himself. Every single dancer a die hard fan, the beginning interviews with the dance crew in the beginning a testament to their loyalty to the musical phenom Michael Jackson.
One of the main things that I love ab out this film is the incredible dancing throughout. The very first audition scene was incredible, with hundreds of dancers dancing at once to one of Jackson's hits. Even the people who weren't picked were not slouches by any reach of the imagination, while watching them all dance it reminded me of the show America's Next Dance Crew. As one of the choreographers put it "you are an extension of Michael Jackson (when dancing).'' These dancers were all incredibly good dancers that obviously took a lot of choreography to be where they are. Just the quality of the dancers, the production quality of the concert was also incredibly high.
The quality of this concert's production was stunning, I couldn't stop thinking "this is the way concerts were always meant to be." The funding put into the concert was incredibly obvious once the C.G.I. and green screen team showed up on set and they set up a gigantic screen behind the stage making it look like there was an endless army of storm troopers behind Jackson as he entered the stage. The same can be said as for later on in the film a recreation of the Thriller graveyard was made and became a movie within the movie as Jackson was brought out on stage by a big metal spider that opened up with him inside of it. One more instance that I thought was real cool was that the first thing that the dancers learned was how to land when being launched up onto the stage from beneath the stage. If anyone has seen how Rey Mysterio from the WWE enters the stage, that is exactly how Jacksons's dancers entered onto the stage which was really cool. The production quality was phenomenal.
The last thing that I loved about this film was how intimate Michael Jackson was with every single facet of the concert's production. He worked with absolutely everything, the guy was working with every drummer, singer, dancer and light person. And while doing all of this, he was so genuinely nice to every single person. In the face of mistakes made in practice, the response by Jackson would be a humble "That's okay, that's why we practice." He stepped on nobody's toes in this while maintaining a level of control over the entire production that was incredible. In one of the final scenes he gathers with the entire crew, holding hands saying "god bless you all," showing off incredible character suitable for someone of his legendary status.
The one thing that bothered me in this film is that Michael Jackson's "save the planet" speech came so late in the film that I had no idea that that was the message he was trying to spread. While it is an incredibly noble message to spread I think it would have benefited the audience to hear it sooner. I think that the more of Jackson's being that we all get to hear the better. I suppose I wanted to hear more of what he believed in even though I was taken back by hoe incredibly nice he was to everyone on board with the production. But regardless of this gripe of mine, it was an incredible show.
I give Michael Jackson's This Is It one huge thumb up and a crotch grab for the ages for giving me an intimate look at what a legendary concert takes to be made by the king of pop himself. Rest in peace Michael Jackson, your music will live on forever, you would have made us proud fans with a concert as grand as this.
