"A tiger with the face of a cow." This is how the ancient sages and Sri T. Krishnamacharya referred to the Yoga Sutras. At first glance, the Yoga Sutras appear easily approachable: the text consists of just 195 short Sanskrit sentences. But behind that simple "face" there are hidden depths.

The Yoga Sutras describes an experience of stillness. It also offers a step-by-step practice guide, using highly technical terms. It is important to clearly understand these terms as defined by Patanjali and Vyasa. The Sutras were originally written in Sanskrit, but knowledge of Sanskrit is not sufficient to fully understand them, just as knowledge of English is not sufficient to understand a medical or engineering textbook written in the English language.

To illustrate the depths of the Yoga Sutras, we are presenting a series of videos on the interconnections between Vikalpa and Samadhi, time, space, language, and yoga practice (see schedule below). Nowadays, there is increasing interest in the study of the Yoga Sutras. However, much confusion and contradiction arises from the modern commentaries. We will use the example of Vikalpa to show how flaws in many modern commentaries can lead students to miss one of the main goals of Yoga Sutra studies: to bring clarity to our mind, life, and yoga practice.

Sri T. Krishnamacharya used to mention that the sutra on Vikalpa (YS I.9) was an examination sutra for the Yogacharya degree. We will also present a video on the Yogacharya Examination as it was given 100 years ago to highlight the knowledge that a Yogacharya (master of yoga) was expected to possess regarding the Yoga Sutras and other related aspects of yoga.
