In this part of her interview with goCognitive, Dr. Behrmann explains the phenomenon of spatial hemineglect. Patients experiencing spatial hemineglect ignore one side of their environment (usually the left side) in multiple modalities. This deficit often occurs as part of severe brain trauma. An interesting research question concerns the precise "definition" of what constitutes the left half of the patients' experience. Is it the position in the visual field, the perception of the left half of the body, or is it related to individual reference systems that are object and task specific? In her research, Dr. Behrmann has attempted to answer some of these questions.
The interview was conducted at the studio of WQED in Pittsburgh by Cynthia Peng, an undergraduate student at CMU.
