This was Loretta Lynn's first big hit. Can't believe I'm hearing Sinead O'Connor sing it!

@TheSteelGeneral Thats what the church had also done to native Canadian familes in Canada. Taken children right from their arms and homes, to go live far away from them.

I like both versions from Loretta and Sinead. This song obviously meant alot to Sinead to sing and make a video. This was about the time when both she and Loretta were struggling(Loretta much earlier tho) with becoming superstars very quickly and while they were very young. Sinead is an artist, she doesn't sing songs for fame and fortune. She was going through some rough times in her personal life at the time I think. But she is an amazing singer and artist.

@pocketgoth so do I !

I wish you success even if that keeps us apart.

I'm a Loretta Lynn fan and I think this version is great.

Well, I doubt that Loretta Lynn would recognise her song here. This, in it's original form is a country song written by Loretta Lynn back in the late 60s. I can't say that Sinead has improved on the original in any way.

@loveshistory I think the saddest part is that it's, what, twenty years later? And it's still the main thing people think of, talk about, when it comes to Sinead. Who knows? Maybe it actually did her career some good: maybe otherwise she would've faded into the obscurity that enveloped so many other promising artists that came out when she did. But I wish people could just focus on her talent more, and not on some stunt she pulled on SNL two decades plus ago.

Sinead has and had a right to be VERY angry with the church and the Pope as a symbol of that. Especially in Ireland, where it's now discovered that children were severly abused, raped and killed in the Catholic orphanages during the last 150 years or so. They were like a Gulag for child abuse. Many kids were just taken, stolen rather, from teen moms because they were deemed to be unfit. There have been at least a dozen of killings, were orphans were beaten to death. Bones have been found.

i don't think that she was refering directly to the child molestetion thing when she tore up the picture of the pope. i think that is a symptom of a much deeper problem that lays in organized religion. it has little to do with god and mostly to do with control. it divides us instead of bringing us together and the thought of a hierarchy of humans is just gross. if god created us all equal, which indeed he did, then the idea that the pope should have such power over people is disgusting.
