Uploaded on Jun 28, 2010

This video was shot on June 22, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. Dr. Eric Hoffmayer and Dr. Sylvia Earle encountered hundreds of whale sharks and successfully tagged a few of them with electronic tags - which will allow them to follow the movements of these animals over the next several months, to determine how much interaction they might have with oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill.

Sorry for the delay - I was having trouble posting yesterday. We have set up our Global Tagging of Pelagic Predators at gtopp.org; there you can see near-real time data from the sharks, as well as the oceanographic conditions around them. There is also an interactive Google Earth-based map with tracks updated daily. Enjoy!

Outstanding. Thanks for this close-up look with this magnificent population of whale sharks. Lets hope your tagging efforts help keep track of them and that they stay away from Gulf oil. Great shots Bryce!
