Are you people fucking retarded? Gandalf never nearly-succumbed to the one ring nor did he protect Rivendel against Sauron.
This scene, was about discouraging Boromir and everyone else on the council from using, or even thinking of using, the one ring. Thats why Gandalf speaks in the black speech, he simply reminds everyone that the ring is evil just like its creator:
"One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."
