I've always enjoyed the subtly of this 1959 RCA recording. The later CBS recording was exciting if a bit frenzied, but misses the sheer poetry demonstrated here.

i think the hammerklavier and appassionata are two of the greatest large scale sonatas for piano in history....beethoven really knew how to penetrate deep into the human psyche
I love the way he plays this sonata this time, so slowly and gravely, with true despair. A great interpretation of this colossal sonata. It is like he is feeling every single note
