Another hand-colored silent movie from my collection. (Also see "The Great Train Robbery" in color from my list.)
This 1904 Pathe-Freres production was made in France with English title cards. The film was laborously tinted frame-by-frame, long before Technicolor made its debut.
BONUS: I have included a very rare clip of US President William Howard Taft filmed in actual color - NOT hand tinted!!

  • Main feature is bizarre.

Yes, background music is "Tiger Rag" by the ODJB, 1918.

I'm wondering about the Taft footage as well. When, where, how?

  • Yes, its the "Tiger Rag". The rare Taft color footage was on an old tape I have about The Presidents.

  • For sure! I had read once years ago that Pathe hired nuns to do the coloring! I don't know if thats true or not, but its interesting.

  • Loved the background music! (Original Dixeland Band...? or was Bix...?)

Where did you get the Harding Footage? (or should I say frames)

Have you seen the mid-20s Cyrano de Bergerac in Pathe color? Amazing!!

  • entertaining and what an achievement to hand tint each frame. The fact that we can do so much with computers nowadays means that what they did back then is now even more amazing and we can appreciate it more.

  • ahh, good old pathe color
