Week 26. A theremin performance of "Ave Maria" by Schubert.
I've now been learning to play the theremin for 26 weeks, so this week is my six month theremin-anniversary! For the last few weeks ongoing health niggles have, once again, kept me from practicing as much as I would like ... but, as this is meant to be an online "diary" of my progress, I felt I really ought to record something at the six month mark, (even if it's so awful I end up deleting it later!)
I chose the Schubert Ave Maria because I started learning it a few weeks ago, (when I posted an unnaccompanied pratice version in week 20) - so it seemed like a good one to work on ... although, sadly, I don't seem to playing it any better. It probably wasn't the best piece for me to chose seeing as there are some far superior theremin performances of it here on Youtube, but I wanted to give it a go. The piano accompaniment (from the excellent http://www.youraccompanist.com ) is a little on the fast side for me, (I find the "twiddly" bits easier if they're slightly slower!)
Well, that's it ... six months ... I really wish I'd somehow managed to do better. I seemed to be advancing okayish to start with, but latterly I feel like I've levelled off, and fear I'll remain stuck in mediocrity, never really getting any good at this amazing instrument ... but I'll keep on studying and practicing, and hope that when I look back in another six month's time that I'll be able to see some small improvement.
sounds good but at times you sound like you're rushing

Yes, at that stage of my learning it was taking all available brain cells to get me near to the right notes ... and so timing wasn't quite right, and I tended to anticipate notes. Hopefully, 18 months on, I'm doing better now .. at least I'm finding pitch easier, so I have an odd few brain cells left over for other refinements!

amazing! this is possible after just 6 months of practice? which musical instruments have you played before?
and which theremin is it? the moog etherwave?
now I'm thinking of buying one myself ...

Thank you! I have played the cello and the piano. I think it is helpful to have learned another instrument previously when planning to learn the theremin.
This particular theremin is a Moog Etherwave Standard ... which is a good theremin to learn on, I think.

Thank you. I recorded this version quite a long time ago. A second version I recorded later didn't please me ... so I really should do a new recording of this piece sometime!
