During our stay in Pune, we met with several interesting people, but there is no doubt that Stephanie was one of the most inspiring. Her dedication to the craft of yoga and the service to people in pain was a teaching in generosity and authenticity. So, we thank her for the time and the help she gave us and hope that you will enjoy watching this little video as much as we enjoyed filming it.
And to know more about her, here is Stephanie in her own words:
"A New Zealander, qualified as a psychiatric nurse in NZ and then moved to Australia to attend Art school graduating in 1982. I encountered and began Iyengar yoga in 1987, in Sydney, Australia. My initial studies were affected by several accidents that left me physically disabled. My only way forward has been to embrace yoga. I made my first journey to the source (RIMYI) in 1991. Inspired by the Iyengar's depth of knowledge and their dynamic presence for their students, I returned to Pune in 1994.
I have remained based in Pune since then, consequently have spent many years working directly with the Iyengar's and assisting them in general and therapeutic classes. For me, the practice of yoga goes far beyond being a therapy for my past injuries, it has become every aspect of my life. Since 2002 I have been traveling and teaching on request and invitation in Iyengar Yoga institutes world-wide.
Having been in Pune since 1994, I invariably became involved in different projects at the institute in particular in the production of many of the Iyengars publications since 1998. This has given me a rare opportunity to absorb the theoretical and philosophical background to their teaching. Consequently and I bring to my teaching this deep experience from working directly with the Iyengars."
