I think also the three times is reference possibly to the bible, as in orginal song it refers to mary wearing three links of chain and on each one was Jesus name. Also the words have changed over the years, scholars desrcibe this song as a song once used by enslaved people. The three times could also refer to a code within the song used by people, as songs often carried alternative meanings and messages within them. Whatever it means it moved me, and glorifies God which is all that counts.
