Taiwan's weather bureau issued land and sea warnings today for a mid-strength typhoon. It'll be the most severe so far this year, with heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 173 kilometers an hour expected overnight before the storm heads to China.

Typhoon Morakot is expected to reach northern Taiwan by early Friday, with sustained winds of up to 137 kilometers an hour. In Taipei on Thursday, heavy rain and low cloud cover, led to poor visibility for car drivers. Some of the city's tallest buildings were barely visible. Others were being boarded up and windows taped to prepare for the storm. Morakot will grow to a category four typhoon early on Friday, passing directly over Taipei before reaching southeast China by Saturday, at a weaker category two. Typhoons regularly hit China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan in the second half of the year. They gather strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, or South China Sea, before weakening over land.

  • I have no sympathy whatsoever to the victims because I was a victim as well. As part of the 1995 Taiwan study tour, they promised me a trip to Taroko Gorge but reneged. I was so furious.

  • As far as heritage is concern, do you think any of us really retain any heritage from our ancesters thousands of years ago? Things like honest, humbleness, integrity, righteousness that we read from books about our ancestors, do you see people really demonstrate those qualities as a whole in our society now? I really doubt it.

  • I believe that culture changes over time, and the whole purpose of having cultures is to retain the best qualities in men/humanity. Discussing of cultures as reference to being Chinese/American/European are politically motivated and a huge waste of time. People will respect you out of your genuine quality, and not whether you are Chinese/Taiwanese/American/English.

  • I am a Taiwanese and I've been living outside Taiwan for the last 26 years. I only knew the things I learned when I was a young person in Taiwan. I don't know anything about Chinese culture. Although I do have some association with mainland Chinese, but I find their way of livings and thinkings are so different from mine.

  • I could care less if Taiwan considers itself a separate country, In fact, I personally agree Taiwan is a separate country, with distinct politics and culture than China, However, Taiwanese have ancestry from mainland CHINA, use CHINESE names and speak MANDARIN CHINESE and write in CHINESE characters. Stop acting like you're better than mainland Chinese people and start appreciating your original culture and ancestry.

  • Good Bless you all in Taiwan. From Malaysia with sympathy & condolence for those affected beloved family members & friends. May this disaster will over soon and never happened again.
