This is a phrase which describes a person who argues the less accepted viewpoint, simply for
the sake of argument.
This expression originated in the Catholic church where an official was appointed to critically
examine evidence and argue against someones elevation to sainthood.
For example, you can say, Jenny believes in global warming; she was just playing devils
advocate, arguing that it doesnt exist.
