Doe Run Peru Part 1

This is part of our four year long investigation of the Doe Run Company's smelter operation in La Oroya, Peru. This story aired in February 2005. I visited La Oroya for the first time in October 2002. This story is the result of my second trip there in January 2005. In all, I traveled to La Oroya six times from 2002-2005. Much of my effort was focused on a book project funded partly by the Fund for Investigative Journalism. I also wrote a front page article for the Sunday Dallas Morning News, which was published in December 2005. The series received six national journalism awards, including the Gerald Loeb award, an IRE certificate and a citation from the Overseas Press Club.
