James Kalm drifts into Soho to kick off the new season with a pair of highly anticipated exhibitions. Tauba Auerbachs HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE presents five bodies of work that are all related to the duality of space, the here, and, time, the now. Illusionistic paintings are contrasted with Auerglass a custom made pipe organ. Kenhinde Wiley explores the photographic medium with Black Light a series of digitally manipulated photos that continues his studies of young black males. Using various lighting sources, decorative backgrounds, gestures and poses that relate to medieval religious iconography, Wiley creates images that balance precariously between Boys in the Hood and GQ Magazine.

  • I don't know, it seemed like Kenhinde Wiley possibly was being a little less than nice (but not rude like someone's comment I won't comment on). I know I don't like someone suddenly pushing a camera in my face... but I just don't like cameras. James, maybe you should just put the camera aside for a moment and ask your subject if they mind before you jump in and just start asking questions. I couldn't tell by the editing but it did seem like you also possibly barged in by mistake.

  • Hey andfalling, yes I agree that it's sometimes awkward to have someone stick a camera in your face. In this case there were already three or four going. After doing this for years and hundreds of programs I know that getting the artist to talk is valuable. Would you rather have no comment (because a lot of people won't)?

  • guh...Kehinde WIley...snooze button

  • He could have at least tried to come up with something better than "illusion is what artist do." And be nice for goodness sakes - like out front in the street when he was suckin' up to the pinballs.

  • IS this a fucking baseball game shut the fuck up john madden!

  • i want to talk to walter

  • I think this video was very illuminating. The interview was great and actually the seriousness of K. Wiley's response made me want look more. Your notes on ornament and the arch and hand gestures was brilliant. Wileys use of ornament is original in that the figure floats in and around it. Why are these guys holding flowers? Good question.

  • I think Kehinde WIley is lame, and that I was underwhelmed by Tauba Auerbach...

  • Thanks!

  • one for the other side :) its 2009 and cameras are everywhere i go, everything is on the internet, new york city is public territory #1 for Art. The james kalm camera must roll unedited, the project must continue. why?...because it's great. thanks, mr kalm...love the interviews:)
