I'm very glad it wasn't sir. I remember Eminem had a song about his mother. He sang "Bitch you aint my keeper, i'm sleeping, What the fuck you keep on fucking with me for? Slut you need to leave me the fuck alone I aint playing. Go find you a white crayon and color a fucking zebra". As obvious as Eminem's talents are, I'd say Sufjan Stevens managed to show his maternal disappointment more elequently. The end.

This song makes me long for something ephemeral. It's like standing on a pier on a stormy winter day and remembering the summer's warmth. It makes something deep within me ache for something I can't quite understand. Thank you, Sufjan Stevens, for putting into music the feeling that I can't quite express to myself.

If only you hadn't spelled eloquently incorrectly, so close to the perfect counter argument.

I know what you mean. This song makes you feel 'nostalgia'--not simply homesickness, but the ache of melancholia buried at the Greek root of the word. Although Stevens' sound wouldn't be categorized as 'soul music', he sings from a place unmistakably informed by and filled with spirit. We all come from spirit. It's immaterial yet pervasive and inhabits us fully. We desire to return to a home that's never been a place, never been a "here". This song connects you to that feeling.

I feel the same. Although I'm not Christian, I'm heavily addicted to Sufjan's work.

Yeah but Eminem isn't really known for his eloquence or subtlety. It's not what he's aiming for, while Sufjan is. It's like saying you don't think "bitches ain't shit but hos and tricks" is eloquent enough. Know what to expect from different artists. It's kind of pointless to compare two completely different artists and genres that have nothing in common apart from theme.
