This original, animated video overviews the history and current cleanup efforts at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford nuclear site, focusing on why it matters to young people. The 586-square-mile Hanford site is located in south-central Washington state along the Columbia River, and holds 60% of the nation's defense-related nuclear waste, making it the largest federal cleanup site. This video was made by a group of Washington State University technical communication students in partnership with the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Other students participating in this project created the educational website HanfordLearning.com and started the B Reactor Facebook Group:

  • @drumology2001 The kind words and sharing are greatly appreciated! Thanks for being our first commenter :)

  • @SomethingSimple63 Thanks for the high praise! It was quite a challenge to fit several decades into a manageable size, but it sounds like it worked. To have someone who has spent as much time on the site as you have appreciate the effort is quite an accomplishment :)

  • @kargenlewis Fair point. As the video notes, there are ripples from this project that affect current generations and those in the near future -- it's quite a mess. A couple of my relatives had complications from exposure. Let this be a lesson to everyone about the perils of warfare, failure to cooperate, and other kindergarten-level concepts.. It's a touchy subject and pretty embarrassing.

  • 1000's have died from this facility. to talk about this place without remembering the people murdered by government lies is sad

  • WOW. Simply amazing. I have worked at Hanford for close to thirty years , This video is the best by far I have seen on explaining what was done and what is being done on production and cleanup at Handford Well done .

  • Very interesting and well done video, you guys! Just came across it this morning on accident, but am glad I found it. Posted it to my Facebook wall for other Tri-Citians to watch. :)
