Halifax Dance's Young Company (YoCo) has been creating exceptional pre-professional contemporary dance since 1988 and is a vital first step into the world of professional dance for serious young dancers. It was founded to give gifted young artists the opportunity to complement their technical training with valuable performance experience. The company offers its dancers the tremendous opportunity of dancing in works created with and for them, by some of the best choreographers in the country. It is also an important educational tool for the promotion of dance to local and provincial audiences.
Since its inception, the company has created two original full-length dance theatre works for school touring, produced 20 seasons of mixed repertoire, and originated the dance component of Symphony Nova Scotia's highly successÂful annual production of The Nutcracker.
Alumni from The Young Company are all over the world performing, creating, teaching and shaping the future of our art form. Many of our former members continued their pre-professional training at internationally recognized institutions leading them to a professional career in such notable companies as Parsons Dance Company (New York), CORPUS (Toronto), Mocean Dance (Halifax), Verve Mwendo (Halifax), O Vertigo (Montreal), SINS (Halifax/Vancouver), and Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia as well as numerous independent choreographers.
