Elizabeth Lange

-Born around the 1800's in Cuba
-Moved to avoid Haiti's racial violence against Blacks

-Elizabeth moves to the U.S in 1817
-Found a home with French-speaking refugees and gathered for Mass each week St.Mary's

-Suffered racial discrimination in baltimore

-There was no education for Black people back then.
-She knew, without education, Blacks had no chance of being free or equal.

-Elizabeth started a small free school in her own home for Black people.
-She taught the kids to read and write. Also using the Bible and reading with it everyday.

-Marie Balas, another refugee, joined Elizabeth.

-Fr. Joubert was so impressed with the women's efforts he suggested they should form a religous community for educating Blacks.

-It was difficult because black women weren't allowed to form religious communities in America.
-Fr.Newman supported them.

They started a religous community called the Oblate Sisters of Providence.


-They met strong prejudice from White Catholics.

-Elizabeth joined the sturggle for equal rights and social justice for all people
-
She then passed away in 1882..
