[A/N: Everyone has that one teacher who's really cool and who you can talk to about anything. This teacher is that one, first name basis and stuff like that.]
The last bell of the day chimed and despite my attempt to slide by the teacher, I was spotted and called back.
"Tessa, what is that?" She pointed a firm finger at my wrist.
Trying my best to hide it, I replied, "Nothing, it's nothing."
"The fact that it's PURPLE doesn't prove that."
"Look, just promise you wont tell anyone."
She shook her head side to side, "I can't."
"What?! What do you mean you can't?!" I folded my arms and winced at the slight stinging of my newer bruises.
"I can't promise you that. I don't know what's going on, so I'm not going to say that I wont be concerned."
I began to walk away, "Well fine. I just wont tell you."
"Alright, alright. I'll make you a deal," She held my shoulders and looked into my eyes, "Depending on how bad it is, I'll tell or I wont. Come on, that's fair."
I sighed, giving in, and took a seat in the first chair in front of the classroom and told her about everything that had gone on since the plane crash.
Holding her chest, she lightly breathed and looked beyond the desk that she had been staring at. Looking up and making eye contact with me, she fought back tears. "Im so, so sorry. I didnt---" She gulped a throatful of tears and continued, "I didnt know at all." She lowered herself into a seat next to me, "What do you eat?"
I squinted my eyes, confused. "Food?"
"No," She placed a warm hand on my bare shoulder, "I mean, when's the last time you had a home-cooked meal?"
Staring at the ceiling, I counted all of the nights that I had gone without even eating, daddy's more intoxicated ones. I shrugged and she stood up and flatted the wrinkles out of her skirt. "Can you come to my house tomorrow night for dinner? I'd say tonight but I ha---"
"No, I couldnt. Im not your prob---"
"I insist." She forced a smile and clasped her hands together, "It'll be fun. You can get to know my sons and everything." When I looked uncomfortable, she added, "You can uh, bring a friend if you'd like. So it won't be too awkward." She laughed dryly, and clutching my bag, I headed toward the door.
"Thanks, Denise."
