  • I can't believe how serious all the comments on this video are, anyone who has seen Nashville would know that this song is meant as irony.

  • @TomasTigre Where's the irony? The things he sings about actually happened. America really has done amazing things and has been through a tremendous amount in a relatively short time. There's never been a county in which so many citizens go around thinking the worst of their nation. I'm not saying to be blindly jingoistic. But give us some credit.

  • The song neglects to mention that the US was dragged into both wars . Their isolationism then is evident today. Also , 2 depressions mentioned , what is ignored is that the US Protectionist policies of the day were the factor that exacerbated the situation, and that failed US economic policies were the root cause. JUST LIKE THE CURRENT problems, head in the sand US policies effect us all, Now they have a socialist in power, we should all bend over and cover our asses.

  • yea don't think that rhymed as well : )

  • This is ironic that people are posting this as a song to get the patriots moving considering the movie this song is from. Brilliant movie though.

  • I think it's a great song about inspiring things that have happened in America. Some see it as satire, but what he's singing about rings true.

BTW, I don't think of Altman's "Nashville" as a parody - more a light-hearted tribute to the country scene at the time. Have u seen "Short Cuts?" Great Altman film I saw recently.

  • I have a feeling that this song is actually a bit more ironic than the images make out considering the film it comes from.

  • This song was Altman's commentary/reference to "Ain't I Right" by Marty Robbins. Robbins song was an answer to the criticism of the south during the civil rights struggle. It cast civil rights activists as dupes of communism and sought to imply that those who criticized segregationist policies were actually attacking traditional "American" values.

  • This is a great song with great photo depictions!

  • Thomas "Tom" Paine (February 9, 1737 [O.S. January 29, 1736[1]] -- June 8, 1809) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He became notorious because of The Age of Reason (1793--94), his book that advocates deism, promotes reason and freethinking, argues against institutionalized religion and Christian doctrines.

  • Just listen ...real people aroudn the world acknowledge the important role of the USA in sorting out many of the World's problems. Australians in general are very supportive of America, as our long term ally...so it's not all bad !!

  • @TomasTigre You're right-- there is more than a touch of satire in it that can be gleaned if you watch the movie.

  • I dunno if they meant this song or if it's supposed to be a joke. But it's true. For example, you're supposed to prefer time-tested encryption algorithms over supposedly better new ones. Following that logic, the US would be quite stupid to copy our European systems, which I doubt will last to see 100 years. Greets from Germany. Don't let anyone trash you, America. You're better than you think.

  • @wondering2x --- Wow... couldn't be more wrong. It was our protectionist policies that built us up - it unleashed the creative potential of a free people living in liberty to prosper without state supported monopolies overseas inundating them and overwhelming our young Republic. Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson as President, Jackson, Lincoln, McKinley, the Rough Rider Roosevelt - they inspired a nation to grow and build and were all protectionists. isolationism lol we kept our noses out... GMB

  • @xtaxplayer Hey, Laugh-In was a hilarious show! Verrrry interesting! :)

  • @SegalTeach I still have the original album my dad bought back in 1976! I was ten at the time and would play this record over and over on the 1970 General Electric record player I still have! Amazing memories! And I love the song still!

  • @TomasTigre Listen up Chico, if you were an

American, you'd understand. Whether it is ironic,

it's still true. If you don't believe that, why are you

    in America?

"Now go home and get your fuckin' shine

    box!"
