In August 2009 I was asked by a production company if they could use my VW type 3 to film a classic car segment for a TV show.

This video is the piece as it finally appeared on a BBC Alba program called Cuibhlichean An Fhortain (I dont know what it translates as).

The program was made for BBC Alba which is a gaelic speaking channel so please do not adjust your set, its supposed to sound like that :-).

This is the same car featured in my other type 3 video but its now fully restored by myself and my good friend Mick. For pictures of the restoration go here;

Anyway, hope you enjoy the video,

Dave.

P.S. Incase you havent watched my other videos, thats not me driving.

  • Beautiful car, never seen or even heard of them before viewing this.

    All I could think about was how awesome it would be to replace the engine with something superfast... But that would obviously spoil such a prestine car!!

  • Thanks. Rust killed a lot of these cars in the past and they were never that popular so there arent a great many left.

    I had a squareback (estate) version of this car a few years back and I managed to fit a 2 litre type 4 engine which was very similar to that fitted in a Porsche 914.

    That was about as big an engine to fit under the hatch but I have seen Subaru engines and Porsche 911 engines fitted to these with the boot floor raised.

  • Cuibhlichean an fhortain

    Wheels of Fortune

  • Cool, cheers for that.

  • Awesome video Dave, I do like those classic Volkswagen's so much.

    Keep them posting

  • My Dad had one of these - a beautiful 1973 metallic blue 1600 fastback. I remember that it did have some rust problems later in life, and was always getting welded back together. Finally the heat exchangers went out, probably when it was about 13 years old. An enthusiast bought it around 1987. Still, fantastic memories and that instantly recognisable engine sound.
