After hearing about a proposed mega-jumbo Airbus back in 2000, I followed the pogress of the then-A3XX. And waited. And waited. Then finally I was able to travel on what we now know as the A380.

For those who think "it ain't that big" - this is the Upper Deck. There are another 311 seats and 12 suites below me downstairs. A fact I had to keep reminding myself of.

First impressions - like a A330/340 plonked on top of a 747?

Interesting to note QF and EK have situated their premium cabins upstairs and the economy section is gated-off on the lower deck, where, as one friend (whom, I might add, describes himself as a "self-confessed snob") who travelled in the premium cabins observed, "the riff-raff can stay down below". A shame.

SQ, on the other hand, seat economy on both decks; affording ALL on board the opportunity to walk up-or-downstairs - and truly appreciate the enornmity of this beast!

  • where's the front, for all we know this is the lower deck. booo thumbs down

  • @gotitans999 trust me - this particular vid is this UPPER deck. I'm sure anyone who's flown SQ's 380s in Y on the upper deck (while we still could) will back me up on this one. The curvature of the walls should be a giveaway that this is part of the ceiling of the 380. Down below the walls are str8 up (or, as come have complained, curve outwards, robbing them of much valued "leaning" space).

  • Thanks for the comments guys - unfortunately SQ is going way of other 380 carriers as all the future 380s are having the upper Y deck zone removed in favour of an all J class upper deck.

The website seatmaps now reflect this change - I've read differing reports about the existing 380 fleet - some say they'll keep the existing ones as is and some say they'll retrofit the existing fleet to all J class upstairs.

Which, when you think about it, almost throws the novelty of flying the 380 out the

  • where were u flying out of?

  • @doubleAspoofs

Flying out of Sydney - I flew from Melbourne to Sydney JUST to catch the 380!

  • would that be seat 81a ?

  • Yup ... I was hoping for 81k but i was lucky to get the seat as there were about 6 others behind me vying for 81 A/C or J/K - this was when the 380 was relatively new.

  • @jboi777 Though they will fly the new A380's with all-business class upper decks, the original batch of SQ's 11 A380s will continue with their existing seating layouts.

  • Not sure if its true, but some say upper deck economy class are pretty crammed.

  • @gotitans999 You can tell by the config of the seats it's 2 4 2

  • I sat in this seat to London and loved the legroom. Pity about the lack of window view.

  • It's true about going up and down the staircase, I did that on a recent trip and filmed it. Would not have been allowed if it had been business class up there.

  • I favourited this just for the groovy boarding music!!

  • @jboi777 now the singapore airlines also flies a380 to melbourne. same with qantas to london and LA. so 6 flights to and from melbourne with the A380 now. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
