According to Pete Seeger, Leadbelly was discriminated against when he and his promoters were trying to set him up for some concerts. One of the promoters said, "they don't know what they're rejecting. They're just a bunch of 'bourgeoisie.'" Leadbelly didn't know what the word meant so it was explained to him. Struck by and tickled by the definition and the alliteration of the word, he composed this song.
