When this song was written the Irish Republican Army was very active and waged a brutal bloody war for independence that left thousands of civilians on both sides dead for no good reason.Many Irish and British citizens remember the horror of those days and remember this song and it's significance.It is far, FAR from stupid.

@ktarnik My point was that there are so many innocent dead and neither side has anything much to show for it except widows, children w/o parents and parents w/o children. Regardless of the intent,this is the result and no other could have been expected. I also said, "civilians on both sides". As for what the song is about, I'd say you're being too broad.The song address this conflict specifically and sounds more like a plea to stop the senseless murders than a condemnation of war.

this is not a stupid song, far from it, but you cannot say for someone's freedom that is no good reason for fighting. Of course, I'm not saying that violence is an answer, but violence of oppressor brought out another violence. Song is about meaningless of war, not cheering for either side. Sunday bloody, sunday.
